PHOTO GALLERY—a Virtual Trip to the Dominican Republic

Known as a nature lover's paradise, the Samana Peninsula features breathtaking waterfalls, lush vegetation, and intriguing caves, caverns and grottoes. The astonishing natural beauty of the area draws tourist from the United States, Canada and Europe.

El Salto del Limon (El Limon) is the most dramatic waterfall in Samana, with water cascading 150 feet into a deep pool of water. Located at the western end of the Samana Bay, the National Park of Los Haitises offers a rich variety of natural wonders such as large expanses of mangrove, humid subtropical forest, Taino caves, sea grass beds and pristine keys scattered along the coast.

Land-based sports include hiking, biking, horseback riding, and caving. The area has stunning coral reefs and underwater formations, clear water and numerous species of fish making it ideal for scuba diving. Snorkeling can be enjoyed at any of the sandy beaches in Las Terrenas, Samana and Las Galeras.
